In Season 4, episode 9 of “Homeland,” Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) will attempt to retrieve Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) from the clutches of Taliban terrorist Haissam Haqqani (Numan Acar) as part of a prisoner exchange. Unfortunately for Carrie and the rest of the CIA, the retrieval will not go as planned.

According to TVGuide, the exchange for Saul, which in response to Haqqani’s demands will set five terrorists free, will go “awry almost from the start” -- but it’s not the Taliban that makes the trade difficult. It’s an “angry” Saul, who previously revealed he would rather die than play a role in Haqqani’s game, who will reportedly make the transaction a dramatic affair.

“Amidst Saul's (understandable) tantrum and the threat that either side could open fire at any moment, Carrie will have to be at her best to once again talk her mentor off the ledge,” reads the report.

While the exchange is said to be an intense ride, TVGuide reports that the real “doozy” comes at the end of the episode. TVLine shared a similar finding, calling episode 9 one of the “top 5 best ‘Homeland’ episodes ever.”

According to Showtime’s synopsis for Sunday night’s upcoming installment, “There’s Something Else Going On,” Carrie will have to “improvise” to save Saul, her longtime mentor and the ex director of the CIA. In a sneak peek clip, Carrie tells Peter Quinn (Rupert Friend) that she fears Haqqani might kill Saul during the hand off.

“I need you in the ops rooms… [Look for] anything the ISI or the Haqqani might try. Maybe getting their guys back and keeping Saul. Maybe even killing Saul,” Carrie says. “I know there’s something else going on.”

So will Saul make it out alive? With the promo for episode 9 showing Saul’s wife Mira Berenson (Sarita Choudhury) in tears and rumors that the cast was recently spotted shooting an "elaborate" funeral scene for the finale, things are not looking good for the fan-favorite character. Unfortunately for viewers, they will have to wait until Sunday to learn his fate.
