The Honda Motor Co. announced a recall for 374,000 of two of its popular vehicle models early Thursday, the Honda Odyssey and the Acura MDX. According to a statement released by the California-based automaker, the vehicles are being recalled for a faulty computer-chip airbag glitch.

American Honda’s press release reported that an estimated 318,000 model-year 2003 and 2004 Honda Odysseys and 56,000 model-year 2003 Acura MDXs are affected. According to a report from Reuters, the recall affects customers in four countries -- the United States, Canada, Japan and Australia -- for an estimated total of 405,400 vehicles included in the recall.

“American Honda will recall [Honda Odyssey/Acura MDX] in the U.S. to address potential malfunctions of the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) airbag system in these vehicles due to electrical interference,” said the release. “To prevent malfunction, an electrical noise filter will be installed adjacent to the SRS control unit, free of charge.”

The recall was reportedly issued after Honda received a “small but increasing number” of complaints in reference to faulty airbag deployment. Though the automaker claims no accidents have resulted in connection with the defective chips, a spokesman for the company, Tsuyoshi Hojo, revealed to Reuters Thursday that there have been several reported cases of injuries as a result of the airbag glitch, including abrasions on hands and fingers.

Car owners will be sent a recall notice via traditional mail starting in late October, and Honda is advising all owners of the recalled make and model years to bring their vehicles to their local, authorized dealer to correct the issue.
