Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman tragically died on Sunday after an apparent heroin overdose. The “Hunger Games” actor has struggled with substance abuse for decades and relapsed in 2013 after more than 20 years of sobriety. Twitterati had a strong reaction to the 46-year-old’s untimely passing and took to the mini-blog to tweet their condolences.

Hoffman was slated to star in “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1,” the movie adaptation of Suzanne Collins’s last book. Hoffman played Plutarch Heavensbess, the Head Gamemaker who replaced Seneca Crane after the 74th Hunger Games. His character was also the commander of the rebel forces of District 13 in the book “Mockingjay.” It’s uncertain what will happen with the film. "The Hunger Games" began filming in Atlanta this September. Hoffman is best known for his remarkable roles in films like “Capote,” “The Big Lebowski” and “Doubt.”

While many Twitter users shared their grief over the actor’s passing, some couldn’t help but be bewildered that members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers outlived the outstanding thespian. The RHCP played during Sunday night’s Super Bowl game, and many of its members struggled with heroin abuse, with guitarist Hillel Slovak dying from the fatal substance in June 1988.

Some shared photos of flowers that were placed outside Hoffman’s Manhattan apartment, the place where he was reportedly found with a hypodermic needle in his arm. While others had no words for his tragic passing, others said they couldn’t believe the talented performer had passed. Others touted him as the best generational actor.
