How To Get Away With Murder” Season 1 episode 4 had an entertaining case with Marren Trudeau (Elizabeth Perkins), a CEO who has been accused of insider trading—but that wasn’t nearly as interesting as what was happening with Lila Stangard’s murder case. Just as ABC promised, the last nine words in the episode changed everything.

The episode started with a flash forward. Right after Sam (Tom Verica) was killed, no one knew what to do. They were in shock.

“Like any of us know how to handle this,” Rebecca (Katie Findlay) said.

Wes (Alfred Enoch) knew that he had to get Rebecca out of there before the cops came, but Asher (Matt McGory) came to the house. He wanted his trophy. The students ignored him and hid below the view of the windows, forcing some of them to look at Sam’s dead body. We don’t know how Wes got Rebecca out, but we saw in episode 2 that she was safe in a motel.

The flash forward implied that Rebecca had never killed anyone before, but that’s not what she confessed to back in the fall. After Annalise (Viola Davis) agreed to represent Rebecca, she found out that Rebecca had already taped a confession. However, they couldn’t get their hands on it until it was officially processed through as evidence, so they had a little time to get a defense together.

Wes was immediately taken off of Rebecca’s case because Annalise blamed him for Rebecca’s confession. Rebecca explained that she only confessed because she wanted them to stop questioning her. Her bail was set at $1 million and she didn’t really stand a chance at defending herself.

Bonnie (Liza Weil) used some sneaky methods to get the tape before it was shown in court. Details on the tape and written confession didn’t match up, so Annalise argued that Rebecca was coerced into confessing. The judge issued an inquiry into the interrogation and lowered Rebecca’s bail to $100,000. She still couldn’t afford it, but Bonnie told her that they had it covered.

“Rebecca, smile. You’re going home,” Annalise said.

On her way up to her apartment, Wes stopped Rebecca. “I’m not supposed to be talking to you,” he told her. But he had to ask her about Lila’s cell phone. He showed her the phone and asked what was on it.

"How To Get Away With Murder" fans didn't see Rebecca's response, but Wes later gave the phone to Annalise. He told her that he kept it because he needed Rebecca to trust him. If he had given the phone up right away, she wouldn’t trust him the way they needed her to. Rebecca’s trust put Wes back on the case. Still, Annalise wasn’t sure that they would be using the phone as evidence.

“Why wouldn’t we?” Wes asked. “I mean those photos are—” Annalise cut him off and told him to let her do her job.

Annalise took the phone home with her. She took off her wig and makeup, and greeted her husband as he came home—and then she asked: “Why is your penis on a dead girl’s phone?”

Maybe Annalise won’t be so upset when she discovers that her students chopped up Sam’s body and put it into trash bags at the end of the semester.
