How I Met Your Mother
"How I Met Your Mother" episode 3 will air on Monday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. CBS

“How I Met Your Mother” is set to premiere its ninth and final season on Monday, Sept. 23. With the end in sight for the long-running CBS sitcom, viewers will finally find out exactly how Ted met his wife … “the Mother.”

The synopsis for the special back-to-back premiere has already leaked online, but now fans can feast on all the details regarding episode 3, “Last Time In New York.”

For those who don’t remember, season 8 found Ted torn about his feelings for Robin. With her engagement to Barney and their impending wedding, Ted dropped the bomb to Lily that he’s going to leave New York and move to Chicago right after the nuptials. The only issue? No one else knows and Lily is sworn to secrecy.

Episode 3 of Season 9 will have Lily attempting to deal with Ted and his big decision over the “longest wedding weekend ever.” According to the synopsis posted by CBS, Lily becomes frustrated with Ted’s secret when she discovers a list of things that he wants to do in New York before he moves. Meanwhile, the clock is ticking on the wedding. Robin and Barney “realize they have very little time together before their relatives arrive for their wedding” and set out to find some private time together.

What about Marshall? He may be missing from the episode description, but we know that his problems with fellow plane passenger Daphne will continue since actress Sherri Shepherd will be returning.

As we previously reported, episode 1, “The Locket,” will find the whole crew on their way to Long Island for Robin and Barney’s wedding weekend. In usual “How I met Your Mother” fashion their trip will become slightly derailed. Robin and Barney will “come across a startling family discovery,” while Lily will be forced to confront Ted about his feelings for Robin. Marshall will have his own problem when he “sees something online that changes the course of his entire back east.” The result will be going head-to-head with a fellow passenger named Daphne (Sherri Shepherd).

In episode 2, “Coming Back,” viewers will be welcoming the return of Barney’s brother, James (Wayne Brady). And while James may be around for Barney’s wedding, he also has some jaw dropping news -- he’s getting a divorce. James’ revelation will leave Robin worried about Barney, while Ted struggles with being alone at a romantic hotel, and Marshall finds himself racing to get to the wedding in time.

“How I Met Your Mother” will return to CBS on Monday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. for a special hour-long premiere. Episode 3, “Last Time In New York,” will air the following week, Monday, Sept. 30, at 8 p.m.
