Google rolled out a new update Wednesday to Google Photos, which brings features such as stabilization of already recorded videos, new dynamic filters with one-tap editing and advanced editing controls. The app now allows users to put together photos and videos from your smartphone’s gallery and create movies from the content.

The new version of the app is currently available only on Android, though an iOS version is expected to roll out soon.

How to add Deep Blue filter in Google Photos

The new Deep Blue Filter for Google Photos adds colors to photos of natural elements such as the water and sky, which makes them more visible and vibrant. To add the effect, you need to follow the instructions listed below:

  • Open Google Photos
  • Select the photos you want to edit
  • Tap the pencil-like edit button on the bottom left side of the photo
  • Select Color
  • You will see a deep blue slider at the bottom — moving it right or left will determine the intensity of the blue in your photos.

It is advisable to use the filter in photos where you want the blue to be dominant, because in some cases the blue also affects other colors in the photo.

Stabilizing videos using Google Photos

If you don’t have optical image stabilization (OIS) on your phone, your photos and videos might come out blurred sometimes. Google Photos now has a new electronic stabilization feature, which can stabilize photos and videos not only when you are capturing them, but also after capturing it.

Here’s how to use the feature:

  • Open Google Photos
  • Select the videos you want to stabilize
  • Tap on edit and you will see two options — ‘Stabilize’ and ‘Rotate the video’
  • Click on Stabilize

The stabilizing and rendering of the video might take time, depending on the size of the video. You might also notice a minor drop in frame rate as certain frames will have to be edited to ensure stabilization.
