Iceland's jobless rate climbed to 7.1% in the first quarter from 2.3% in the corresponding period last year, the Statistics Iceland said Friday. The number of unemployed persons increased to 12,700 from 4,200 in the previous year. During the first quarter, the jobless rate stood at 9.2% for men and 4.8% for women.

Meanwhile, the number of employed persons decreased to 165,500 in the first quarter from 174,000 last year. The employment rate declined to 73.8% from 79.1% in the previous year.

During the first quarter, there were 178,200 persons in the labor force, up from 178,100 in the same quarter last year.
