A Woodridge, Illinois man has been charged with first-degree murder after striking his father repeatedly with a weed trimmer.

Yashesh Desai, 21, has been charged in connection to the death of his father, Sanjiv, according to DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin and Woodridge police chief Steve Herron, NBCChicago.com reported.

"Sanjiv Desai's life was tragically taken from him, allegedly by his own son," Berlin said in a statement. "I would like to thank the Woodridge Police Department for their quick apprehension of Mr. Desai."

Desai's brother called police at approximately 3 a.m. Sunday morning to tell them that his brother had killed their father.

Sanjiv was taken to a hospital for treatment, where he was pronounced dead due to "massive head wounds," Herron said.

Woodridge is a suburb of Chicago. Desai is a student at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, according to his Facebook page.

A neighbor of the Desai family told the Chicago Tribune that she and her husband enjoyed the neighborhood and its people, including the Desai family.

"They were always polite," she told the Tribune. "I'm in shock right now."
