Word about Zhitomirskiy's death began spreading in the tech community on Saturday night, the reported noted. However, the cause of Zhitomirskiy's death and the date has not been reported.
Diaspora is a project that was started by New York University students as an alternative to companies such as Facebook. The four launched Diaspora last year.
The group has reportedly raised more than $200,000 in donations through its use of a fundraising platform start-up called Kickstarter, according to CNET.
