A teenager in India’s capital city of New Delhi was shot dead and her mother critically injured after they tried to stop a man from urinating in public, the police said Thursday.

Binno alias Gudiya, a 17-year old girl, and her mother Sadmani, 40, confronted their neighbor, Javed, 28, when he was urinating outside the gate of their house Wednesday evening.

"The incident was reported late Wednesday evening at E-Block in Hazrat Nizamuddin of south Delhi," Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary told IANS.

"When Sadmani tried to prevent him from the act, the accused allegedly started abusing her. Hearing the commotion, Binno also came outside the house," the police officer said.

Following the argument, Javed threatened the girl and mother saying; “I'll see you.” He went to his house in the same building.

“When he returned, he called out their names, whipped out a pistol and opened fire at Binno and Sadmani,” the Deccan Herald reported.

The girl was shot twice in her abdomen while her mother received a bullet injury. Both were rushed to the hospital where Binno was declared dead on arrival and her mother was in a critical condition.

Binno was a Class 11 student at Jangpura Government School.

Javed escaped from the scene and police were investigating the crime.

Javed was an accused in some criminal cases, including an attempt to murder case, the Deccan Herald reported.

"We have registered a case and have launched a hunt for Javed," Additional Commissioner of Police Ajay Chaudhary said.
