An investigation is underway after a police officer was shot on the near northeast side of Indianapolis Friday morning.

Officials with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed three people are dead after gunfire was exchanged with police at around 7:10 a.m. in the 2600 block of North Dearborn Street, WISH TV reports.

The officer, who has not been identified, was shot but saved by a bulletproof vest he was wearing, police said in a tweet. The suspect that shot the officer is believed to be one of the three people that were shot and killed.

Police said the officer is expected to recover. He is reportedly in good condition at Eskenazi Health.

So far, investigators had few details about the three people found dead on the scene. IMPD confirmed that two of the three dead were females. The one male who is dead first fired shots at the officer. The body belonging to the suspected shooter was found outside a home. Two more bodies were found inside.
