The trailer for “Insurgent” has arrived and features action, romance and a strange box that no one seems to understand. Shailene Woodley stars in the second film in the “Divergent” series, based on the young adult books by Veronica Roth.

The trailer opens with Erudite leader Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet) gushing over the discovery of a magical-looking box, calling it “the future our people deserve.” The trailer suggests that the plot of the upcoming sequel has to do with Matthews experimenting on Divergents to unlock the box’s power. Somewhere along the line, it is learned that the ideal Divergent to open the box is Beatrice Prior (Woodley). However, the real head scratcher behind the “Insurgent” plot is simply that this mysterious box was never featured in Roth’s novels.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, many fans have theories as to what the box is, based on what they know about the other books in the “Divergent” franchise. However, nothing is certain given the movie’s choice to step far away from its source material.

“NOT HAPPY WITH THE INSURGENT TRAILER,” wrote one disgruntled fan on Twitter. “THEY CHANGED SO MUCH…WHATS UP WITH THAT BOX THING??? ONCE AGAIN ANOTHER SERIES RUINED.”

More reactions continue to pour in on social media as fans reconcile their confusion with the film’s drastic change from the books.

In addition to the strange box, fans were treated to a glimpse of the film’s action. While on the run, Beatrice, her brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Four (Theo James) decide to take the fight to Matthews by enlisting the help of others outside the faction system, known as “The Factionless.” Together they take on Erudite with lots of bullets, explosions, punches, kicks and more in a fight to save what little civilization human beings have left.

Joining Woodley, Elgort and James in the cast of “Insurgent” are Miles Teller, Naomi Watts, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoë Kravitz, Maggie Q, Mekhi Phifer, Daniel DaeKim and Octavia Spencer. The film is directed by Robert Schwentke and will be released in 3D March 20, 2015
