Prominent Anonymous Twitter accounts have unanimously denied the validity of Anonymous-OS, a computer operating system supposedly designed and released by the hacktivist collective. The OS was posted on SourceForge several days ago for free use and has already been downloaded over 26,000 times in just four days. While several comments on the page suggest that entire thing is a hoax, Anonymous-OS still has a 57 percent approval rating and 327 likes on Facebook.

A description on Source Forge, where the operating system could be downloaded reads Anonymous-OS Live is an ubuntu-based distribution and created for educational purposes, to checking the security of web pages. The OS was created under Ubuntu 11.10 and uses Mate desktop.

A corresponding Tumblr page was set up to provide updates on the development. The blog includes an 'About' page that notes that the operating system should not be used to destroy any web page. The warning continues, If you attack any web page, might end up in jail because is a crime in most countries [sic]. Misspellings and poor grammar are not uncommon in Anonymous's messages. However, they can also be a warning of internet scams.

The manager of the Anonymous-OS Tumblr responded to warnings from Anonymous Twitter accounts, posting the message, If any user believe that Anonymous-OS is wrapped in trojans or backdoored OS by any Law enforcement Company or Hacker please don't download it!

Preinstalled apps on Anonymous-OS include ParolaPass Password Generator, Find Host IP, Anonymous HOIC, Ddosim, Pyloris, Slowloris, TorsHammer, Sqlmap, Havij, Sql Poison, Admin Finder, John the Ripper, Hash Identifier, Tor, XChat IRC, Pidgin, Vidalia, Polipo, JonDo, i2p, Wireshark, Zenmap and more.

Following the lead of high profile Anonymous Twitter accounts and other internet news sources, the IBTimes does not recommend downloading Anonymous-OS, however, if you can't resist, here's a tutorial from YouTube.
