Apple is expected to release three iPhone models this year, the iPhone 7S, iPhone 7S Plus and a 10th anniversary iPhone with a curved OLED screen. However, the iPhone 8 (or iPhone X) screen is rumored to be better visually but have less functionality, according to report by Nikkei.

The OLED screen with curved edges for the iPhone 8 will be solely provided by Samsung. The curve will be “gentler” than screens in Galaxy S7s “due to the challenges of making curved glass covers to match screens,” Nikkei reported.

“While the curved screen will allow a viewable area of about 5.2 inches and make the iPhone even sleeker, it will not offer significant new functions, the person said,” the report added.

OLED screens are better than current LCD screens, since they have a sharper color contrast. Other companies have implemented OLED screens on their devices, which means Apple is late to the party. However, the company is not expected to offer any groundbreaking functions with the curved screens.

Other rumors suggest the company will stick with a flat display, but that won’t take full advantage of OLED displays, a source told Nikkei. The design of the device has not been finalized, which means Apple could change its course, the source added.

Previous rumors have suggested Apple’s iPhone 8 will come with a glass back. China's Biel Crystal and Lens Technology will supply glass backs for the device and Foxconn Technology Group will provide the front glass covers, according to Wednesday’s report.

Apple iPhone 8 Rumors, Price

Last month, KGI securities analyst Ming Chi-Kuo suggested the 10th anniversary iPhone could feature a 3D-sensing front camera that may support depth sensing for games and facial recognition. The iPhone 8 is also rumored to come without a physical home button.

Since the iPhone 8 is expected to come with an OLED screen, the device is rumored to be priced at more than $1,000. The iPhone 7S and iPhone 7S Plus are expected to come with LCD panels.
