Protesters Outside UN During General Assembly

The atmosphere inside the U.N. General Assembly has maintained a sense of calm and order over the past two days of the annual session opening. But outside the U.N. compound in New York, at 48th Street between First and Second avenues, protesters of various stripes held forth.

People demonstrating against the clerical regime in Iran stood side-by-side with anti-Chinese demonstrators protesting over conditions in Tibet, who stood next to anti-Bashar al-Assad regime protestors, alongside pro-Morsi demonstrators holding “I (heart) Mr. President” signs and one man in a Ron Paul shirt holding a sign about how the government is lying to everyone.

They've been making quite a lot of ruckus about their various causes and got a bit louder on Wednesday, just before Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's speech to the U.N., when the spokesman for the deputy foreign minister, Ramin Mehmanparast, was walking by the protest. He was quickly confronted by the anti-Ahmadinejad protestors, who began shouting verbal threats at him, the Associated Press reported. Mehmanparast had to wave the police over, who quickly extracted him. He was not hurt in the incident.
