A young Irish athlete is fighting for life after sustaining a brain injury in a match on Treasure Island, San Francisco.

Mark McGovern, 22, arrived in the Bay Area last week to play Gaelic football for the summer. The athlete, who is admitted at San Francisco General Hospital, is in a critical condition.

League and Team officials, in a statement, said that McGovern was injured in an “off-the-ball” incident during the match against Celts.
League Chairman Oliver McElhone said, McGovern is in coma and is being visited by relatives from Ireland.

Belcoo O’Rahilly’s, McGovern’s Irish team, said that he was a remarkably talented footballer and one of the most decorated players of the team.

“The entire community is very saddened and concerned for Mark, We have today spoken to Pauline Maguire (Marks Aunt). She has advised us that all Mark's Immediate Family, Parents Danny & Josie, Sisters Connie, Helen & Grace. His Uncle Bernard along with his Girlfriend Jessica and Lorna (Jessica’s mother) are currently with him in San Francisco,” a post on Belcoo O’Rahilly’s official website said.

Police are investigating McGovern’s injury but said, they are yet to find any witnesses, the San Francisco Gate reported.
