While Marvel and Netflix have made tremendous strides with their connected superhero TV shows by introducing Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter) and Luke Cage (Mike Coulter), many were wondering if the fourth member of the planned “Defenders” miniseries would ever arrive. Fresh off the rumor that the hero’s show was in danger of being canceled, Marvel Studios has announced both a showrunner and plot synopsis for the upcoming “Iron Fist” series.

The news was originally reported by Heroic Hollywood, which confirmed that seasoned TV veteran Scott Buck (“Dexter,” “Six Feet Under”) would be taking the reigns of the new show and be responsible for bringing Danny Rand from the pages of Marvel comics to life on Netflix.

“I’ve always been drawn to writing complex, intriguing characters, and that’s what most excites me about the opportunity to bring Danny Rand and ‘Iron Fist’ to life with Marvel and Netflix,” Buck said in a statement.

This marks the first real step toward making “Iron Fist” a reality since the project was initially announced alongside “Daredevil,” “Jessica Jones” and “Luke Cage.” As previously reported, many believed that the lack of any casting, synopsis or news in general regarding the project meant that the studio had changed its mind. The rumors became so widespread that they prompted a response from Marvel’s CCO, Joe Quesada. Now, with contract ink on paper and a creative mind ready to get to work on the project, the studio has even released the first official plot synopsis for the upcoming series:

“Returning to New York City after being missing for years, Daniel Rand fights against the criminal element corrupting New York City with his incredible kung-fu mastery and ability to summon the awesome power of the fiery Iron Fist.”

As ComicBook notes, although “Iron Fist” is moving forward, there will likely be quite a while before the 13 episodes series hit Netflix. Now that “Jessica Jones” has dropped, the next show will be “Daredevil” Season 2, followed later in 2016 by “Luke Cage.” After that, odds are good that Danny Rand will make his debut ahead of “The Defenders” miniseries, which aims to bring all four heroes together in 2017.
