On Monday Israel's ambassador to Cairo apologized for an Israeli air strike that wounded five Egyptians near the border on Sunday.

Shalom Cohen's apology came as security sources said an Israeli missile landed in an Egyptian neighbourhood on Monday but did not detonate.

The wounded Egyptians include two children. They were wounded when an Israeli aircraft bombed a network of smuggling tunnels on the Palestinian side of the Rafah border town.

According to Cohen, the Israeli aircraft were aimed for militants in the Palestinian territory.

To date since the beginning of the conflict, one Egyptian border guard has been killed and two others wounded.
