Issa Rae is more than secure when it comes to the return of her HBO comedy series “Insecure.” The actress-director teased in the recently concluded MTV Movie and TV Awards that she is “very secure” of the plot of the upcoming season.

“I love the stories we’re telling, we’re filming -- as you know -- and our actors are killing it. Jay [Ellis], Yvonne [Oriji], they’re killing it,” the writer-actress told Entertainment Tonight. “Me and the writers put in work this season. We feel like we're really staying true to life.”

Rae admitted she felt the pressure around her. “I feel the pressure around me. People are like, you gotta come correct. But I just want to tell a good, progressive story and I feel confident that we've done that.”

The first season of the TV series covered the issue of infidelity. For Rae, the topic is interesting because men and women respond differently to this issue.

“It’s not [a deal breaker] for women, right? A lot of women stay with their men post-cheating, but a lot of men are like, ‘Nah. I’m out,’” Rae explained. “So it’s an interesting discussion.”

“Insecure” Season 2 was renewed alongside “Westworld” and Sarah Jessica Parker’s “Divorce,” Deadline reported. It was the first major renewal decision for Casey Bloys, president of HBO programming, who succeeded the position from Michael Lombardo in May 2016.

Bloys decided to renew Rae’s “Insecure” because he noticed that it received an impressive social media response from its massive fan base. The HBO programming head also believed that the series represents a voice that is important for him.

In addition to this, the series averaged 3.2 million viewers. It was nominated in several award-giving bodies like Golden Globe, Dorian Award, MTV Movie Awards and more. It received a few recognitions, including the Best Performance – Comedy for Rae in 2017 NAMIC Vision Awards. It was also in the fourth spot in the African-American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) 2016 Top 10 TV Shows.

“Insecure” tells the story of the contemporary black female experience. Rae and Yvonne Orji stars as best friends in the series where they deal with their imperfections and the uncomfortable truths of living their day-to-day lives.

For those who are already very excited for the next season of “Insecure,” Rae announced its premiere date on Twitter. She shared an over a minute clip where she spilled the date and captioned it with “‘When does season 2 of #InsecureHBO premiere,’ you ask?”

According to Rae, “Insecure” Season 2 will return on HBO on July 23. “We’re coming back happier, stronger, better, doper than ever. I’m so excited for you guys to see what we’ve been working this summer,” she added.

Rae created the hit comedy TV show with Larry Wilmore. It was based on the former’s web series “Awkward Black Girl.” There is no discussion if Willmore will have a more active involvement in Season 2, but he served as a consultant, too. The series is executive produced by Rae, Prentice Penny, Melina Matsoukas, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Jonathan Berry. The series also stars Lisa Joyce, Jay Ellis and Natasha Rothwell.
