Italian industrial orders plunged 31.3% year-on-year in January due to a 30.6% fall in domestic orders and a 32.5% decline in non-domestic orders, statistical office ISTAT said Friday. Economists had forecast total orders to drop 21.8%.

On a monthly basis, orders fell 2.1%, while economists had expected a 4.5% fall.

Total industrial turnover slumped 25.1% in January from the previous year. Domestic sales were down 23.8%, while overseas sales tumbled 28.2%. Turnover was down 2.1% month-on-month.

Industrial turnover, adjusted for calendar effects, decreased 19.9% year-on-year in January.
