Tuesday, the Italian statistical office ISTAT said retail sales rose 0.7% year-on-year in January, while economists anticipated 2% fall. A decline of 0.3% in food sales was offset by an annual 1.2% increase in non-food sales.

Month-on-month, sales were up 0.3% in January compared to a fall of 0.2% expected by economists. Food product sales slid 0.3% and non-food product sales grew 0.5%.
