At least 36 people were killed and 11 were injured Sunday night when a bus on the A16 highway between Naples and Canosa in Italy crashed through a guardrail and soared over a viaduct on the way to its final resting place in heavy undergrowth an estimated 90 yards below, according to the Italian-language Ansa news agency.

The bus driver is believed to be among the dead, Ansa reported.

The bus hit several cars before leaving the highway outside Avellino in the Campania region, BBC News said.

The injured were taken to hospitals in Avellino, Salerno and Nola, Ansa said.
