Retail sales in Italy declined a seasonally adjusted 0.7% month-on-month in February, reversing a 0.3% growth in the previous month, the statistical office ISTAT said Tuesday. Economists expected retail sales to fall 0.2%.

During the month, retail sales of non-food items dropped 1% while that of food items rose 0.3%.

Year-on-year, retail sales were down 3.1% in February, reflecting a 1% fall in food sales and a 4.1% drop in non-food retail sales. In January, retail sales were up 0.7%.

In the January to February period, retail sales slipped 1.3% compared with the same period in the previous year.
