The two main unions representing striking Italian truck drivers said on Wednesday they were suspending a three-day blockade that had cut fuel and food supplies and forced factories to close.

The unions said they had decided to halt the protest after the government, which declared the strike illegal, put forward proposals addressing their main concerns, including an offer to look into reducing diesel costs.
