In addition to playing the role of Mackenzie “Mickey” Murphy on “The Mick,” Kaitlin Olson also serves as an executive producer of the new FOX sitcom. Although the 41-year-old actress admitted that doing double-duty for the show is not easy, she said that she likes the fact that she’s involved in all aspects of the series.

“It's just a lot more work,” Olson told Maxim of producing the show while portraying the lead role. “I care very, very deeply so there’s some inherent stress involved there, but I love it. If this show fails, at least it fails with me making it the show I wanted to make, and I could only do that if I were producing it. I wanted to be in the editing room; I wanted to be reading scripts and giving notes; I want to be doing all of that stuff. And it was so important for me to cast it.”

In a separate interview with the New York Magazine earlier this month, the actress explained why it was necessary for her to cast the rest of the show’s stars. “Coming off a show (‘It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’) where we just work so well together and the chemistry really works, I really needed to cast actors … [who could make] the show what I wanted it to be,” Olson explained.

“I picked those kids and worked with them a lot during auditions,” Olson told Fairfax of Jack Stanton (Ben Pemberton), Thomas Barbusca (Chip Pemberton) and Sofia Black D’Elia (Sabrina Pemberton), who play Mickey’s newphews and niece on the show. “They are all wonderful. They have completely different energies and all bring something special and unique to the show.”

“As does Carla Jimenez,” Olson added of the actress who plays the Pembertons’ domestic help, Alba. “She is comedically gifted and she and I can improvise a lot — which is fun.”

An all-new episode of “The Mick” airs tonight at 8:30 p.m. EST on FOX. Check out the synopsis for Season 1, episode 3, titled “The Buffer,” below:
