Incumbent President Ivan Gasparovic has emerged victorious in the second round of Slovakia's presidential election, indicated the initial results announced early Sunday after the counting of almost 99% of the votes polled.

Initial results indicated that Gasparovic has secured more than 55% of the votes polled, well ahead of his rival Iveta Radicova of the opposition SDKU-DS party, who received only 44.47% of the votes counted.

With 99% of the votes counted, the initial results indicate a guaranteed victory for Gasparovic, making him the first Slovak president to be re-elected. The final results are expected to be announced later on Sunday morning by the country's Central Electoral Commission (UVK).

The Slovak citizens respect me and I didn't disappoint them - that's what decided the election, Gasparovic said after the initial results were announced. I am thankful to all the people and I promise I will always work for them.

The turnout for the second round of elections for the largely ceremonial position of president was 2,242,162 or 51.67 percent of Slovakia's more than four million registered voters. It was higher that the turn out for the first round by roughly 8 percentage points.
