A Dungeons & Dragons dungeon master is killed while playing the fantasy tabletop game in Season 3, episode 9 of “iZombie.”

According to the synopsis for the episode, Clive (Malcolm Goodwin) and Liv’s (Rose McIver) investigation of the murder reveals that the victim “was up to more than just playing in his mother’s basement.”

Liv eats the brain of the victim, and as part of solving the murder, the assistant medical examiner hosts a Dungeons & Dragons day. As seen in the trailer for the episode, Clive, Ravi (Rahul Kohli), Major (Robert Buckley) and Peyton (Aly Michalka) all participate in the special event.

In an interview with Yahoo TV last April, McIver admitted that she was not familiar with the Dungeons & Dragons game prior to receiving the script for the episode. “I didn’t know anything about the game or not enough anyway, and so I had a crash course,” McIver told the news outlet.

During the same chat, McIver revealed that the most fun scene she has filmed in the whole series so far was a scene from the Dungeons & Dragons episode. “In the Dungeons & Dragons episode … Liv hosted a Dungeons & Dragons day for all the cast, so we get to see everybody playing,” the Kiwi actress said. “Board games in general bring out such a different side to people, and you could even see that in the show. You get to see that particular competitive streak, and we laughed our heads off. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had on set in the whole three seasons while shooting that.”

Also in next week’s episode, Liv meets Chase Graves (Jason Dohring) for the first time. “He is so fantastic,” McIver told TV Insider of working with “Veronica Mars” alum Dohring. “He has a really specific character who is unlike anything we’ve seen. He’s not just another tough guy — he’s calculating and interesting. Liv doesn’t quite know where to put him, initially. I think people will enjoy seeing [Jason] in such a different role.”

In an interview with TVLine, executive producer Rob Thomas said that even though Chase was introduced as a “badass military” guy, viewers will eventually learn that he, too, has a certain charm. “I feel like he came in, and he was sort of just delivering this badass military guy,” Thomas said of Dohring. “[But] after a couple of episodes, I said, ‘Bring some of that charm back. Don’t just give me military guy. Bring me some of that sly charm.’”

After watching a cut of episode 12, Thomas said that the Dohring is “so good” in delivering that sly charm. “So I’m really excited. I think he’s found the sweet spot for the character,” the exec producer added.

“iZombie” Season 3, episode 9, titled “Twenty Sided, Die,” airs on Tuesday, May 30 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
