Czech National Statistics Office head Jan Fischer will be appointed as Prime Minister of a caretaker technocrat cabinet on Thursday, office of Czech President Vaclav Klaus said.

The formation of a new government made up of non-partisan experts was necessitated after a center-right governing coalition headed by Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek lost a no-confidence vote last month.

Topolanek, who is also the leader of the Civic Democratic Party, and opposition Social Democratic Party Chairman Jiri Paroubek agreed on the idea of an alternative government.

Under a deal signed by both sides, the interim government will assume power on May 9, and will continue to rule the country until the snap polls to be held before October 15.

Fischer has reportedly accepted the post and said that he will begin talks on the composition of the new cabinet next week.
