The CW show “Jane the Virgin” has always been a happy and upbeat show, but things might undergo a drastic shift next season as lead star Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) deals with a terrible blow — her new husband Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) has just been shot and is now fighting for his life.

Rodriguez told AOL that this development will force Jane and her family and friends to deal with life on a more serious note. “We're going to grow big-time in this next season. The writers are going to great lengths to have Jane grow up. There's growing pains,” she said.

Meanwhile, Rodriguez also discussed how her role in “Jane the Virgin” helped catapult her to fame. The actress said she was able to gain fans from all over the world because of the show, so she truly values the opportunity she's been given.

“It grounds me to know that the work you do matters and not to take it for granted," she said. “But other than that, nothing much has changed. I'm still in the same apartment. I still haven't bought a car. I refuse to buy a car. They depreciate. I'd rather give that (money) to my family. The coolest thing about ‘fame’ is that I've had the opportunity to help my family. It's what I always wanted to do.”

Just recently, Rodriguez starred in the environmental film “Deepwater Horizon” as Andrea Fleytas. She described her character as a “courageous” woman whose story deserves to be heard.

The actress even posted a photo of the movie poster on her Instagram account (@hereisgina) and asked her “Jane the Virgin” fans for their support.

“I humbly ask all of you for the support you have granted me these past few years to also support my new film ‘Deepwater Horizon.’ I know I didn't get this far alone,” she said. “I know I don't just represent myself or my family but every person who wanted to go after their dreams and feared rejection or failure but rose to the challenge. I know that I am no one without the hustle, struggle, and perseverance of all of my family, friends and warriors. I dream with my eyes open.”

Meanwhile, Rodriguez earlier told Digital Spy that she hopes to use her fame to inspire today’s younger generation to become the best versions of themselves, so she always makes it a point to pick roles of women that would serve as good role models.

“Deepwater Horizon,” which is directed by Peter Berg, was released on Sept. 30, while “Jane the Virgin” Season 3 will premiere on Monday, Oct. 17, at 9 p.m. ET on The CW.
