After Jane Gloriana Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) fell back in love with her baby daddy Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) and went on a date with her first love Adam (Tyler Posey), it seems like “Jane the Virgin” Season 4 is moving farther and farther away from Jane’s late husband, Michael Cordero (Brett Dier).

However, show creator Jennie Snyder Urman told The Hollywood Reporter that Michael will still be a huge part of the show. Despite his absence, he will still influence Jane’s life and romantic pursuits.

“He'll always be informing so many of her decisions. He’ll be present with new loves and with old loves in terms of what she’s feeling and how it compares to Michael,” Urman said. “She’s going to be publishing her book this year which is a book about her love story with Michael but with a happy ending so there’s all these places where it’s going to constantly come up and be the emotional under layer that informs her actions. How heavily we go to that well will depend on the story that we’re telling. The loss of Michael is something that Jane will continue to feel throughout the episodes, just depending on what story we’re telling, that will dictate how heavily we go into it.”

With Adam back, does this mean Jane and Rafael’s love story is done for good? It seems likely, since Rafael is determined to make things work with his ex-wife Petra (Yael Grobglas).

At the same time, Jane hates the thought of stirring up trouble. If it means swallowing her feelings for Rafael just to keep their family peaceful, she’d definitely do it.

“Jane’s mentality is to never disrupt something harmonious, but I think she can’t deny there’s a connection she has with Rafael and will always have,” Rodriguez said during an interview with The CW.

But even though Rafael wants Petra back, it seems like the two of them will face some struggles because Urman told TV Line Petra will have “a variety” of paramours in her “great, twisty, turn-y love life this year.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 airs every Friday on The CW at 9 p.m. EDT.
