The relationship of Rogelio De La Vega (Jaime Camil) and Rafael Solano (Justin Baldoni) took a huge leap this Season 4 of “Jane the Virgin” after they were both left in charge of Mateo while Jane Villanueva (Gina Rodriguez) went on her book tour.

Rogelio confessed that he kept his distance from Rafael because the latter was a ladies’ man who broke his daughter’s heart. For his part, Rafael told Rogelio that he needs to respect the fact that he is Mateo’s father. In the end, the two seemed to have broken the barrier that has been keeping them apart.

When asked if it’s possible for the two to even become best of friends, Camil told Bustle that it might happen in the future. “You know, Jennie [Snyder] Urman, our showrunner, she’s brilliant at developing the stories of the principal characters, but there are a lot of principal characters,” he said. “So, sometimes, we might tap into something, like, ‘Oh, yeah, Rogelio’s going to be friends with Rafael’, but then over three or four or five episodes you need to develop the other story lines in the show. So, that will probably put that relationship on pause.”

Camil added that these two “devastatingly good-looking [men]” might even form a bond similar to what Rogelio had with Michael. However, it will take time to develop.

“I think, eventually, [Rogelio] will understand that Rafael is Mateo’s dad and he needs to be around and he’s changing,” the actor explained. “He’s becoming a more responsible guy, not so much of playboy, and, of course, eventually that’s going to surface in Rogelio’s heart for Rafael.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 is currently on its mid-season break. According to TV Guide, the show will make its return on Jan. 26, Friday.

Urman told TV Line that the first episode back next year will tackle Jane and Rafael’s kiss. “Whether it is or isn’t is going to be a question as we come back from our break,” she said, since “a lot of the hurt and the actions that were taken in the first half of the season are still there.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 4 airs Fridays on The CW at 9 p.m. EST.
