“Jane the Virgin” star Gina Rodriguez is in love — as in head-over-heels in love with her boyfriend, Joe LoCicero.

Rodriguez is so smitten with LoCicero that she even shared a sweet post for him on her Instagram. In the photo, Rodriguez can be seen looking up at her boyfriend as he leans in for a kiss. In the caption, she said that LoCicero makes her smile not only on the outside, but also on the inside.

It’s a good thing that Rodriguez is in a good place in her life right now because the same thing cannot be said of her character, Jane Gloriana Villanueva. In Season 3’s “Chapter Fifty-Four,” her husband Michael Cordero (Brett Dier) sadly passed away and left her a widow.

It was a heartbreaking twist fans did not see coming, and the show’s creator Jennie Snyder Urman even tried to soothe fans’ disappointment after the episode aired. Snyder wrote an open letter to them on her Tumblr page and explained their thought process while writing the death scene. She said they knew about Michael’s death very early on. That is why in Season 1, they had the narrator foreshadow it subtly by saying Michael would never stop loving Jane. “For as long as Michael lived, until he drew his very last breath, he never did,” said the narrator.

“Honestly, I put that line into the script at the last minute to hold our feet to the fire, to make sure we went through with it. Because even back then, the writers could all see the magic of Jane and Michael together. Not to mention Rogelio (Jamie Camil) and Michael!” she wrote.

“The other reason I put that line in the script was to prepare you… a little,” Snyder continued. “If the writers and actors loved Michael so much, then I knew it would be devastating for the fans.”

But even after dying, Snyder said Michael will still be a part of the show. When Vulture asked if he’ll appear in flashbacks, Snyder confirmed it, saying, “Oh, for sure. For sure. Exactly. In her fantasies. And you will feel him, I will say, very, very much, as we continue.”

“Jane the Virgin” Season 3 airs every Monday at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
