Japan's labor cash earnings fell 3.7% year-on-year in March, a report by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare said Friday. Economists expected a drop of 2.7%.

During the month, cash earnings for scheduled time dropped 1.3%, while the overtime payments declined by a sharp 20.8%.

Among the industries, the total labor cash earnings slipped the most in eating and drinking places, and accommodations, by 11.3%. This was followed by a 6.1% drop in cash earnings in manufacturing.
