Japan's merchandise trade balance surplus narrowed to 85.2 billion yen in January compared with a revised surplus of 544.2 billion yen from 545.3 billion yen, while it was expected to show a deficit of 136.0 billion yen. The adjusted merchandise trade balance came in at 728.44 billion yen compared to a prior revised 655.9 billion yen from 522.8 billion yen, and it topped analysts' estimates of 544.5 billion yen.
