Jenny Sanford, the wife of South Carolina's governor Mark Sanford, has filed for divorce after her husband publically confessed in mid-June that he had been in an extramarital affair with an Argentinean woman.

The couple married in 1989 and had four children. Jenny had told Vogue magazine in August that she was willing to forgive her husband but admitted the process of reconciliation was going to take time.

This came after many unsuccessful efforts at reconciliation, yet I am still dedicated to keeping the process that lies ahead peaceful for our family, Jenny Sanford said in a statement, according to the Associated Press.

Mrs. Sanford is a former Wall Street vice president who had managed several of her husband's political campaigns. She cited adultery as the reason for divorce, according to the Associated Press.
Gov. Sanford was a potential presidential candidate for 2012.
