Having a new baby is always an emotional time for new parents, and now, “Jimmy Kimmel Live” host Jimmy Kimmel and his wife, Molly McNearney are updating fans on the scary situation they recently went through regarding their son, William, and the terrifying heart condition that nearly killed their newborn.

In an emotional monologue at the start of his show Monday night, Kimmel revealed to his viewers that his newborn son, who McNearney gave birth to on April 21, had to undergo open heart surgery that night because he was born with a condition known of Tetralogy of Fallot with Pulmonary Atresia. He revealed his son survived the scary situation, and should make a full recovery after another surgery in a few months. He thanked every member of the medical staff who helped them through the event, and asked everyone to make donations to Children’s Hospital of Los Angeles for helping save their son.

Following the monologue, Kimmel took to Twitter to thank fans and viewers for all of the supportive tweets and the donations that were already made.

McNearney has also since taken to Twitter to share a photo of Kimmel and William, sharing how thankful she was for all of the love she had in her life because of her son and her husband.

“I am thankful to love and be loved by these two brave guys. Both criers,”she wrote.

In the image she shared, Kimmel can be seen looking down at his son and tenderly touching his head. He also smiles as he looks down, and their son also appears to have an adorable smile on his face.

The parents haven’t shared any other updates, though they appear to be in good spirits about their situation.

The monologue also saw Kimmel discussing politics and the ongoing battle in government over healthcare as President Trump continues trying to find a way to repeal and replace former President Obama’s signature Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare. Bringing up the situation, he revealed that he was thankful that despite the President’s proposed $6 billion cut in finding to the National Institutes of Health, Congress didn’t approve the cut and instead increased funding by $2 billion, something Kimmel was thankful for because such cuts could be the sort of thing which prevented other children in the future from getting the kind of care his son received.

“More than 40 percent of the people who would have been affected by those cuts to NIH are children and it would have had a major impact on a lot of great places, including Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, which is so unbelievably sad to me,” he said.

The monologue came after Kimmel took a week off from his show with no word to fans as to why.

His son’s condition, according to the American Heart Association, is one that is most often diagnosed in infants and children, and means that blood travels across holes from the right chamber of the heart to the left chamber. It leads to obstruction in the pulmonary valve from the right ventricle to the lung artery and prevents a normal amount of blood from being pumped to the lungs. When the pulmonary valve is completely obstructed, it leads to Pulmonary Atresia.
