John Kerry Confronted By Fox News Sunday After Controversial Israel Comments Recorded

As the ground war in Gaza moved through a fourth day, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was recorded between interviews talking by phone to an aide and saying U.S. diplomats need "to get over there." Kerry was miced in preparation for his appearance on "Fox News Sunday," apparently unaware the device was live.

The clearly frustrated secretary said: “It’s a hell of a pinpoint operation. It’s a hell of a pinpoint operation,” adding: “We’ve got to get over there. Thank you John. I think John, we ought to go tonight. I think it’s crazy to be sitting around.”

Shortly after the comments were made, on-air host Chris Wallace confronted Kerry, asking if he thought the Israeli government had perhaps gone too far.

“While you were on camera and while you were on microphone, you just talked to one of your top aides about the situation in Israel and the fact that 14 Israelis have apparently been shot and killed in an operation,” Wallace said.

Dozens of Palestinians, including civilians, were killed in Sunday's fighting as well as 13 Israeli soldiers.

The clearly irritated Kerry, who made the rounds of the Sunday morning talk shows, began shaking his head moments before the clip was replayed to him.

"It's very difficult in these situations," Kerry said, while reiterating the United States supports Israel’s right to defend itself. He quickly explained himself by saying, "I reacted, obviously, in a way that anybody does in respect to young children and civilians.”

During a CBS interview with “Face The Nation” host Bob Schieffer, Kerry said that he is “planning to go” to Israel, “and probably very shortly.”
