The now former CBS evening news anchor Katie Couric is discussing a deal with ABC. It's rumored that Couric is closing in on a deal for an afternoon talk show to air in the fall of 2012.

The Los Angeles Times reports that some major deal points have been hammered out, although there are still outstanding issues surrounding compensation.

Disney Chief Executive Robert A. Iger was said to have been strongly interested in having Couric back at ABC, partly due to the departure of The Oprah Winfrey Show.

There will be a gap in the afternoon talk show schedule now that Oprah is wrapping up her long-standing show. The last episode will air on May 25th.

To fill the programming void, recent rumors of a possible Matt Lauer and Couric reunion have been circulating.

At a news conference last week, 'Today Show' co-host, Meredith Vieira, announced that she will be leaving the show. Disregarding the question of whether Lauer is leaving as well, he stated that his long standing deal with NBC is still in effect. He said he will not be leaving the network 'for a while.'

Couric's spokesman, Matthew Hiltzik commented, Speculation around Katie is exciting, but there is no new deal to announce.
