After studying Scientology for five years, Katie Holmes has decided to return to the Roman Catholic Church amidst her split from Scientologist husband Tom Cruise.

The Huffington Post reported Monday that Holmes is abandoning Scientology.

Tom Cruise's estranged wife officially returned to the Catholic faith by registering at the Church of St. Francis Xavier in New York City, the site said.

Holmes reportedly started studying Scientology after marrying actor Tom Cruise, perhaps the world's most prominent Scientologist.

But just because the Dawson's Creek actress has Scientology in her past does not mean she's not welcome in a Catholic church.

Everyone is thrilled to have Katie join us, a member of the church's choir told the Huffington Post. She has not yet attended a service, but when she does she will be welcomed with open arms.

The church, on 16th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in Manhattan, is known for inclusive thinking and being gay-friendly, the Huffington Post noted.

The Roman Catholic Church parish strives to be a prophetic, welcoming community, inclusive witness to the presence of Christ Jesus in our midst, according to its mission statement on its own website.

The St. Francis Xavier Church also says it is a respectful community where seekers and their questions are welcomed, where injustice is challenged, where the poor, the alienated and marginalized find a home, and where people are refreshed, reconciled and renewed.

Holmes, an Ohio native, graduated from Notre Dame Academy, an all-girls Catholic school in Toledo, the IMDB stated, so she's no stranger to Catholicism.

Cruise and Holmes made a joint statement on Monday saying, We are committed to working together as parents to accomplish what is in our daughter Suri's best interests. We want to keep matters affecting our family private and express our respect for each other's commitment to each of our respective beliefs and support each other's roles as parents.

Katie Holmes, 33, filed for divorce from Tom Cruise, 50, on June 28.

Though many have speculated that Scientology is a big factor in the divorce, neither side's lawyers commented on the issue, according to Reuters.

The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life, Holmes attorney Jonathan Wolfe said in a statement.

Cruise was Holmes' first husband, he has been married twice before, to actresses Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman.
