Kellogg recalls peanut crackers, cookies over salmonella

Kellogg Company announced a voluntary recall of some of its peanut butter products because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

The products include certain Austin and Keebler branded Peanut Butter Sandwich Crackers and select snack-size packs of Famous Amos Peanut Butter Cookies and Keebler Soft Batch Homestyle Peanut Butter Cookies.

Products impacted were produced on or after July 1, 2008.

The recall comes after Peanut Corporation of America, a Kellogg supplier, expanded its earlier recall to include peanut paste and and not just peanut butter. PCA did not sell its products directly to consumers.

Consumers who had purchased the recalled products were urged by Kellogg to detroy them.

Salmonella is bacteria which can lead to infections which cause diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps, according to the Centers for Disease Control. In some people the disease maybe so severe it requires hospitalization which can cause serious and extreme cases even death.
