Samuel Wanjiru, 24, Kenyan Olympic marathon champion, died after falling from the balcony of his home in the town of Nyahururu, Kenya, reports Reuters.

“We are not sure whether the gold medalist had deliberately killed himself or fallen by accident,” police said. “He suffered internal injuries after the fall, late on Sunday,” police added.

Last December, Wanjiru was charged for threatening to kill his wife and for illegal possession of an AK-47 assault rifle.

Nyahururu, where the 24-year-old marathon champion lived, is located in the Rift Valley, which is 94 miles (150 km) northwest of capital Nairobi.

Wanjiru was the first Kenyan to win Olympic gold in the marathon in Beijing in 2008. He was the former winner of the Chicago and London marathons.
