The low-carb diet trend is nothing new, and these high-fat, high-protein diet plans that limit carbohydrates seem to be only growing in popularity. Celebrities like Demi Moore, Jennifer Aniston and Kim Kardashian swear by the low-carb method for shaving the pounds off.

The Ketogenic diet is similar to the Atkins or Paleo diet -- rich in fats and protein but low in carbs. Scientists are now saying that this approach can help boost mental health, like relieving depression and bipolar disorders.

This thought is supported by Michael Berk, a professor at the Deacon University of Medicine in Australia, who says there is a clear link between diet quality and mental health.

Omega 3 fatty acids do in fact enhance your mood and mental state; Dr. David Perimutter says “the brain thrives on a fat-rich, low-carbohydrate diet”

So what’s for dinner?

When following any of the low carb diet plans you should limit yourself to 50 grams of carbohydrates a day and eat a diet rich in grass-fed meats, dairy, fish and nuts. Skip the fries and ask for a salad instead, but don’t eat the croutons.

A diet rich in unprocessed fats and proteins will not only help you loss weight as we head into summer, but it will also boost your mood and lower your blood sugar. Say goodbye to depression, bipolar, high blood sugar and hello to that bikini body you have always wanted.
