The Knick
Will Dr. Edwards finally gain some respect in episode 5 of "The Knick" Season 1? Cinemax

Friday night means another visit to “The Knick.” The fifth episode of the turn-of-the-last-century hospital drama’s premiere season will air at 10 p.m. EDT on Cinemax. The gritty series has been turning heads with its relentlessly graphic surgery scenes, its alarmingly ominous music, and rapid-fire humor (led by star Clive Owen). The new episode is shaping up to be a good one as the synopsis reveals tensions in the show will start to reach a boiling point.

Last week Dr. Edwards pulled one hell of a stunt in the operating room, withholding a step in a procedure to force the other doctors into letting him operate as a patient lay bleeding to death on the table. Meanwhile, Dr. Thackery finally paid a visit to Abigail as she recovered from her skin graft procedure at the urging of Lucy, who then followed Thackery home -- or rather to a brothel, getting a glimpse into the brilliant doctor’s unconventional after-hours activities. Dr. Bertram gave his father a tour of the Knick in Episode 4 and received a disapproving lecture about his career choices. Sometimes it seems no one on “The Knick” is capable of a moment’s happiness.

That does not seem about to change as the synopsis for the next episode promises more tension. Mr. Barrow, who seems to have no end to his corruption, will face another debt problem with Collier, which he will attempt to pay with getting one of Collier’s men into the hospital for care (a better deal than paying with his teeth). Meanwhile, Edwards, still desperate to prove himself to the other (white) doctors, will attempt to improve on a hernia procedure. Will he utilize the revolutionary vacuum he stumbled across in the last episode?

Fans are sure to see more blood and guts Friday night as the doctors of “The Knick” struggle to heal the people of early 1900s New York City, but will any of them ever learn to heal their own personal lives? Fans will have to tune in Friday night to find out.
