The Xbox One may not be backward compatible, but iPad users will soon get to play one of the most popular games from the original Xbox on the popular Apple tablet. “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” is now available on the App Store for $9.99 to commemorate the game’s 10th anniversary.

KOTOR was originally developed by BioWare and produced by the now-defunct LucasArts, the video game branch of LucasFilm responsible for Star Wars games. It was one of the most commercially and critically successful games of 2003, receiving more than 40 “Game of the Year” awards and becoming a favorite among both gamers and Star Wars fans. It has been featured on several “Best Game of All Time” lists.

“Being able to bring one of the most beloved Star Wars games to iPad for such a momentus event is an incredible honor,” said Elizabeth Howard, the vice president of publishing at Aspyr, the Austin, Texas-based company responsible for the iPad version of KOTOR. “We have a long history at Aspyr of bringing the best games to Apple platforms, and as bona fide fans of the original release, we’ve worked to ensure that “Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic” for iPad lives up to its prodigious reputation.

The game takes place thousands of years before the Star Wars films and features deep character customization and branching storylines. Decisions players made in the game would affect the storyline and their characters’ abilities.

Fans of KOTOR have been on somewhat of an emotional rollercoaster. While the “Star Wars: The Old Republic” was well received, it wasn’t a true follow-up to the original Xbox games. Despite rumors swirling about a possible KOTOR 3, all hope seemed lost with the sudden closing of LucasArts. A new hope was born when Electronic Arts bought the rights to make Star Wars video games. The fact that EA owns BioWare is even more encouraging for fans.
