Kristin Davis, the New York City madam-turned-comptroller candidate who claimed she once supplied her opponent, ex-Gov. Eliot Spitzer, with prostitutes, has been arrested on charges of illegally selling prescription pills to a known drug dealer, the Manhattan U.S. attorney’s office announced Tuesday.

“Prescription drug abuse results in more overdose deaths in this country than heroin and cocaine combined,” U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said in a statement posted to the office’s Twitter account. “This Office has a zero tolerance policy towards anyone who helps to spread this plague at any level.”

Bharara said Davis was charged with illegally distributing prescription pills.

“As alleged, Kristin Davis sold dangerous and highly-addictive prescription pills to a known drug dealer on repeated occasions in exchange for cash," the U.S. attorney said in a statement sent to International Business Times

FBI Assistant Director-in-Charge George Venizelos said Davis committed the illegal acts on four separate occasions "to an FBI cooperating witness.

"This type of criminal activity is illegal for citizens, and is especially unbecoming for a person seeking public office in the City of New York. The FBI and our partners in law enforcement remain committed to investigate and bring to justice those individuals who illegally distribute prescription medicines for their own financial gain," Venizelos said.

Davis, 38, allegedly sold a variety of prescription pills, ranging from Xanax and Ambien to Percocet and Oxycodone, according to the complaint filed against the former Manhattan madam. She was arrested as part of an ongoing investigation that nabbed five other people, according to the U.S. attorney's office.

She faces up to 20 years in prison on each of the four charges against her if convicted.
