At least 50,000 gallons of crude oil spilled early Thursday morning onto a half-mile area of the Atwater Village neighborhood in Los Angeles, the Los Angeles Fire Department said in a statement.

A handful of commercial business, including a gentleman’s club that was evacuated, were affected by the spill, although no injuries were reported. The fire department said the oil is “knee high in some areas.” The spill occurred after a 20-inch oil line broke around 1 a.m. local time. It was unclear which company owned the oil line, which was remotely shut off. The fire department was on the scene to contain the runoff.

NBC Los Angeles reported that the oil was seen “shooting into the sky.”
