“Legends of Tomorrow” executive producer Phil Klemmer has a pretty good reason why they picked Damien Darhk (Neal McDonough) and Kuasa (Tracy Ifeachor) as villains for Season 3 of the CW series.

In a recent interview with Cinema Blend, Klemmer revealed that Damien and Kuasa were chosen as next season’s baddies because both have personal connections to the Legends, particularly to Sara (Caity Lotz) and Amaya (Maisie Richardson-Sellers). “You want bad guys who have enriched our characters’ story personally, as opposed to just two-dimensional ‘I'm a bad guy who wants to rule the world,” Klemmer explained. “Our show is frothy, and it’s always personal.”

Damien appeared in nine episodes of Season 2. He was the first one to be recruited by Eobard Thawne (Matt Letscher) to help him locate the pieces of the Spear of Destiny. But after successfully de-powering the Spear of Destiny and erasing Eobard from existence in the Season 2 finale, Sara also wiped Damien’s memory and returned him to Miami 1984.

“We’ve come up with a way that he can come [back] into our show,” Klemmer teased of Damien’s return. “You know he was kind of glib and a lighter version of himself last season. [So] we want to give him some real teeth and a real sort of sinister presence, and then we want to slowly build out his dark alliance.”

As to how Kuasa’s introduction will affect Amaya, Klemmer said, “Amaya thought she had this destiny to fulfill [and] this season she’ll learn that her destiny wasn’t just pure” because she’ll find out that there’s also “a line of evil through her family.”

Kuasa is Amaya’s granddaughter and Mari McCabe’s (Megalyn Echikunwoke) elder sister. Kuasa made her first appearance in the Arrowverse in the series premiere of the CW Seed animated series “Vixen,” where the character was voiced by Anika Noni Rose. Kuasa was named the guardian of the Anansi Totem when she was 4. But after local warlord Eshu attacked her home village of Zambesi, her mother fled with her baby sister, Mari, and the totem. Kuasa tried to get the totem back from Mari and essentially became a villain. Kuasa, however, ultimately met her demise while fighting alongside her sister and Ray Palmer (Brandon Routh) — a moment that will hopefully be addressed on “Legends of Tomorrow.”

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 3 premieres on Tuesday, Oct. 10 at 9 p.m. EDT on The CW.
