Rip Hunter (Arthur Darvill) may be buddying up with a young version of George Lucas (Matt Angel) when the Legends find him in tonight’s Season 2, episode 9 of “Legends of Tomorrow.”

According to IGN, the ragtag team of time travelers locates their former captain in 1967 Los Angeles, where he is living the life of a graduate film student, with Lucas as one of his classmates and colleagues.

In addition to reminding Rip of his past life as a time master, the Legends are also going to fix a huge time aberration that is created when the Legion of Doom tries to capture Rip. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly last month, executive producer Marc Guggenheim revealed that the time aberration in the episode is that Lucas quits film school.

Guggenheim said that Lucas’ career shift is going to deeply affect Ray (Brandon Routh) and Nate (Nick Zano), as both Legends are avid fans of the filmmaker’s works. “As a result [of Lucas’ decision to quit film school], he never makes ‘Star Wars’ or ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark.’ As a result, Ray, who became an engineer because of ‘Star Wars,’ and Nate, who became a historian because of ‘Raiders’ slowly start to lose their brilliance, because those things that inspired them to become who they are didn’t exist,” he shared.

During his recent chat with IGN, Guggenheim shared how they came up with the Lucas storyline for the episode.

“We knew we were going to end the first half of the year with seeing where Rip ended up and we always knew he was going to be ended up in the last place you expected,” Guggenheim said. “And originally it was going to be he was working in a video store, so it was going to be in the 1980s. I forget how exactly, but the writer’s room of Legends, which is amazing, we sort of collectively came up with this idea of, well, instead, it’s 1967 and instead of a video store clerk he was a film student.”

“I guess we were sort of kicking around the idea that Rip would be involved with entertainment somehow, Hollywood somehow,” he continued. “But once we made him a film student and shifted it, we were like, ‘He could be going to film school with George Lucas!’”

“Legends of Tomorrow” Season 2, episode 9, titled “Raiders of the Lost Art,” airs tonight at 9 p.m. EST on The CW.
