“Lethal Weapon” executive producer Matt Miller shared a little backstory between Roger Murtaugh and LAPD Chief Gina Santos ahead of the Season 2 premiere of the Fox series.

As previously reported, Santos (Michelle Hurd) starts to spend more of her time at LAPD’s robbery-homicide division after Captain Brooks Avery (Kevin Rahm) lost control of Roger Murtaugh (Damon Wayans) and Martin Riggs (Clayne Crawford) following the duo’s unwanted trip to Mexico. “Captain Avery has sort of lost control of these guys, so we need someone to play the heavy, to come in to crack the whip,” Miller told TVLine last month of the need to introduce a character like Santos.

Apparently, Santos’ authority over everyone at the division won’t only be the cause of tension between her and Murtaugh. Miller previously revealed that due to a “finger linger” Santos and Murtaugh shared during a stakeout years ago, the father of three is “immediately freaked out” when he sees her at the division.

In a more recent interview with TVLine, Miller revealed more details about that “finger linger.” “There was an incident [between Murtaugh and Santos] many years ago,” Miller said. “[Murtaugh] explains to Riggs that they were on a stakeout late one night, they were in the car together, and ‘Dancing in September’ came on the radio. They both reached to turn the volume up, and their fingers hit and ‘lingered.’”

Miller said that the intimate moment has taken on a deeper meaning in Murtaugh’s mind because he considers it as “a major source of sexual tension that is basically a chasm between the two of them.” The executive producer noted that Murtaugh eventually called Santos on it, but she claimed that “she has no recollection of the incident.”

At the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour last month, Wayans said that Hurd is a “wonderful” addition to the show. “Michele is awesome, and the character is someone from my past,” the actor said (via Deadline). “I think I had something going on with her, but it’s really in my mind … it’s fun.” See the first look photo at Hurd’s character below:
