South Korean electronics giant LG Group said Tuesday it would step back from the tablet sector after Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT), the biggest software developer, introduced its Surface tablet for shipment in the year's second half.

The private LG will concentrate more on smartphones, where it's already a market leader, as well as other electronic products, representative Ken Hong said in an email following Microsoft's Monday night announcement.

LG had introduced the Optimus Pad with plans to add an Optimus Pad LTE later but will not do that now, Hong said.

Shares of Microsoft, based in Redmond, Wash., rose 86 cents to $30.70 in Tuesday trading.
